Stick It Wear?! is born from my personal artistic expression, a testament to a vision that defines art as, a profound journey into the depths of our essence. As beings wired for awe, we can explore that role in the cosmos through experiences like a peaceful forest stroll or gazing at a star-lit sky. Awe guides us in understanding our connection with God or 'all that there is,' which can also be facilitated by art, on a human-to-human level.
The 1980s wasn't just a decade; it marked a seismic eruption of cultural and athletic phenomena. It was a realm where new music genres and cinematic marvels collided with unprecedented sporting feats, giving birth to a new era of competitive genius. In the midst of this excitement, corporations seized the opportunity, creating and marketing products to capitalize on these 'New Gods.' New stories emerged, brimming with energy and infused with these novel forms of culture. Yet, as facsimiles multiplied, resolution diminished, and the original intent faded. We now find ourselves entering an era where cultural loss and dwindling creative achievement loom ominously. Marketers and social media flood us to the point of desensitization, distancing us from our beloved interests and others with their genius and awe-inspiring qualities.
For me, Stick It Wear?! emerged as a means to simplify these distractions and refocus on the movements that evoke awe. Similar to a child glimpsing the form of a parent from afar, these movements evoke profound emotions. The same can be said of our heroes, igniting a spark that fills our hearts with inspiration and gives birth to legends passed down through generations.
With years of experience being a creative, I've witnessed the mind's power when engaging with a still image for an extended period. Beyond the initial lull, the mind unravels messages imbued with emotional depth. Hence, I refrain from explicit names or direct references to athletic inspirations. The abstract simplicity invites your personal mental library to fill in the gaps, challenging you to recall why you loved a specific sport or athlete—reminiscing about moments of excitement, safety, and, of course, awe.
While the 1980s democratized music with the advent of compact discs, the accessibility of visual art remained a luxury. Stick It Wear?! challenges this status quo by featuring art on apparel—a mobile gallery where heroes and memories accompany us, making art ownership as accessible as flipping through a book of prints.
My hope is that you use this platform as a springboard for finding fond memories or discovering a new fountain of youth. If your goal is to simply look good, that will work as well.
Best,
Joe
